Parallels 6: Working Software… At Last
I have loved virtualization technology since my days on Digital Equipment (DEC) mainframes. Zac asked me to look at the new Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac since he knows from our conversations that I’ve become a Parallels skeptic. Even though I am a daily user of Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac, it has been a painful user experience. The best I can say for Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac is I’ve learned to work around it.
With trepidation I backed-up my virtual machine Windows 7 environment and did a clean install following the procedure in Zac’s previous post. Downloading and installing Parallels Desktop 6 was easy with one minor issue. Parallels Desktop 6 couldn’t find my existing virtual machine Windows 7 .pmv file. The main menu insisted on creating a new virtual machine and requested a Windows 7 installation DVD. I double clicked on the .pmv file to complete the install. I then ran Parallels Desktop 6 through my bug list.

I can report that Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac is a vast improvement. The Parallels design team’s focus on eliminating 32-bit code, fixing USB, and overall performance improvements in the system and 3D graphics was spot on. I was even pleasantly surprised that my virtual machine Windows 7 Windows Experience Index showed 3D graphics performance improved from 3.8 to 4.3. Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac meets my definition of “working software” I feel comfortable recommending to others.
As I finished my testing of Parallels Desktop 6 for Mac, my iTunes playlist decided to voice a concurring opinion by playing the Beyoncé version of the Etta James classic, “At Last”.
